Which Kindle or Kindle Fire do I have?

Sometimes you want to know what your Kindle can do, accommodate, connect with, and so forth. And sometimes you need to know what model you have to answer that question. My question is, will my Kindle Fire HD allow me to “quick switch” between running apps and such without returning to the home page or carousel? I really want to know!

You would think that the answer to this question would be pretty straightforward, but it’s not. As I was reading up on techniques for switching between running apps quickly, I realized that my specific Kindle Fire HD might not support that function. So I had to determine once and for all what kind of Kindle I was staring at in my hands.

After an inconvenient amount of searching and running down various rabbbit holes, I found the one sure-fire way to determine which Kindle or Kindle Fire you have. It is as simple as checking the serial number!

Ok, that is a chore in and of itself, but the quickest quickest way to do so is to open up your Amazon account on the computer and hold the mouse over your greeting at the top: “Hello Will” with “Your Account” beneath it. Hovering will drop down the menu and you want to select “Manage Your Content and Devices.” Look for the Devices tab on the page that opens, and click it. There you will see listed all the Kindles, Kindle Fires, and Kindle Reading Apps registered to your account. Click the device you are curious about. Along with the Send to Kindle email address for that device, you will see the device “Type” (of some value in determining your model) and below that you will see “Serial Number.” Therein lies the answer.

The first four characters/digits in the serial number are model specific. Here is a list that shows you which serial numbers line up with which models:

Kindle 1: B001 (of course, Kindle 1 has a unique form factor…;-)
Kindle 2: B002, B003
Kindle DX: B004, B005, B009
Kindle 4: B00E, B023, 9023
Kindle 5: B012
Kindle Keyboard: B006, B008, B00A
Kindle Paperwhite (2012): B024, B01B, B01C, B01D, B01F
Kindle Paperwhite (2013): B0D4 or 90D4
Kindle Touch: B00F, B010, B011
Kindle Fire (2011): D01E
Kindle Fire (2012): D026
Kindle Fire HD 7(2012): D025 and D059
Kindle Fire HD 7(2013): 00D3 and 00D2
Kindle Fire HD 8.9: B0C9, B0CA, B0CB, and B0CC
Kindle Fire HDX 7: D0FB, 00FB, 00FC, 0072, 00FD, 00FE, 0073, 006C, 006D, 006E
Kindle Fire HDX 8.9: 0018, 0057, 005E, 00F3, 0019, 0058, 007D, 007E, 007F

Come to find out, I have a Kindle Fire HD (2012), which means that “Quick Switch” between apps is not available to me. So I can stop searching for it. Sheesh.
